My Favorite Pastime Lately

My favourite pastime of late has been watching old (1938-1940's) Agatha Christie movies or listening to her mysteries read on tape.
I do both through youtube. They have a large selection of both.

Now I'm not just sitting while I do this.
Oh no, no, no...

Last week I finished the kitchen curtains that I had told you I was making. They turned out nicely.
I'm sorry I don't have any picture to share right now, but I will describe them to you at least.

The material is a large lime green buffalo check fabric. I made the curtains by the kitchen table long with ruffles and the curtain over the kitchen sink is a ruffled valance that's gathered vertically in two places.
I hope you can visualise that!!
This will be a true test in just how good my writing skills are now, right?

Then over the weekend I had my baking day. I do this every other weekend.
I like to get a weeks worth of baking done in one day.
This weekend I made Chicken Enchiladas, Meatloaf,  a Bacon and Broccoli Quiche, Rhubarb Galette and Coconut Macaroons.
I realise that this isn't enough dishes to last a week, but I'm fortunate enough to have a husband who doesn't mind cooking also!

Since Tim's mother and sister are here visiting, we drove over to Lake Superior last Thursday.

You might remember these photos from last year when just Tim and I were there.
It was a gorgeous day this time around too!
We enjoyed climbing the rocks, searching for a few blueberries, and just soaking in the sun's rays while we visited.

On a more serious note; our daughter is going in for a small surgery on Wednesday.
I would so appreciate your prayers that all goes well and that she will have a quick recovery too.
Many thanks to all of you-Kimberly

Companies On the Way

Me Today!
cleaning lady
Yes, company is on the way so I had no choice but to clean the house today.

Tim's mother and sister are on there way up from Michigan. My MIL has an apartment with us and will be staying for a while now.
They will be traveling HWY 17  North.
It is a gorgeous drive with much of it being along Lake Superior.

Winter Jan-2014 017

This photo is from the trip down to Sault Ste. Marie that Tim and I made six weeks ago. I can only imagine how much higher the banks on the side of the road are now.
Winter Jan-2014 013
This is a photo of Lake Superior. As many of you know we lived on the lake until this last June.

Oh, I can’t tell you how much I miss looking out my window and seeing the beautiful Gitche Gumee.
Winter Jan-2014 001
The trees were really snow laden and beautiful the last drive down too.
I sure hope Tim's mother and his sister have a beautiful, sunny day travelling as we did.

This will be my last post for this week.
I’ll be back to visit all of you next week!

Our Upper Pennisula Sculpture Tour

While visiting at our daughter Emily's home in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, our g'children decided to take us to a metal sculpture
park that Starlet's school had visited for a class outing earlier.
Lakenenland is located outside of Harvey, just before arriving at Marquette, Michigan.
I have to tell you I drove past this park many times when we lived in the U.P., not even knowing what it was.
If you happen to visit this area, you must stop!
It is well worth it and it's free.

Here's our dear Starlet with the whole world on her
back.

I think the g'children climbed on every single piece of sculpture.
It sure gave me opportunity for a lot of good photo
taking.

Our Star reaching for the stars!

At first Lambert wouldn't let me get a photo of him, but by the time we were half way through our tour he was wanting his picture taken on every sculpture.

I can't begin to share all the sculpture photos with you.
And I'm sure you're thinking, "Thank goodness."

I can't leave you though without showing you this awesome picnic shelter at the park.
I could slap up a few walls and live here!

Oh, I forgot to mention that it is right across the road from Lake Superior, so I would definitely feel right at home here.

********************************************************
We did get a skiff of snow here last night.
But that's okay because I don't plan to go outside today anyway.
Something that I did bring home with me that I wish I hadn't was a rotten cold!
I've been pumping myself full of Echinacee and drinking my sore throat tea, so I'm sure it will pass quickly...
I hope this finds all of you well!
Take care-Kimberly

I Tried It and It Worked

Have you ever seen a smart tip or idea on Pinterest and thought, 'that surely can't work'?
Well that is exactly what I thought when I read that you can re-grow romaine lettuce simply by placing the remains of the stalk in water and placing it in a window.
But look, it's working!
I'm especially excited because the lettuce in my garden appears to be stunted from all of the rain and no sunshine for so long.
We did have a reprieve from all the rain last weekend so Tim and I headed to the lake.
This is a bay off of Lake Superior about an hour from our home now.
It does seem a little strange to have to drive to the lake after living on it for so many years!
But I do have to have my fix every now and then.

I've still been concentrating my efforts on decluttering.
Excuse me a minute: Mary Wells is singing, 'My Guy' and I can't miss it.
Do you ever watch those Doo Wop shows?
I do occasionally, but what I really got hooked on was, 'Il Volo'.
I think I've seen those young guys eight times now.
I did draw the line when they came on tonight with a Christmas special.
There is no way I'm listening to Christmas music before the U.S. Thanksgiving!
Would you?
No, it is just way too early.

Oh, I really got side-tracked, didn't I?
Must be the hour.
If you'd like more info on how to re-grow your own lettuce I have it pinned under
'A Green Thumb Garden'.
Take a look, it's amazing.

Driving the Superior

As many of you know my husband and I have recently moved  to a Northern Ontario community.
It is located almost exactly half way between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay.
If we want to shop in the 'Big' city we have to drive five hours to one city or the other.
We opted for Thunder Bay this time.

The scenery is gorgeous as you drive along the lake.
There are many high cliffs or what I call mini-mountains!
When we arrived we booked a room at The Prince Arthur.
It's a historic hotel located near the waterfront in the old downtown of Thunder Bay.
My husband always wanted to stay at The Prince Arthur
and now he can say that he has.
We had a beautiful view of the harbour and waterfront from our hotel window.
We later walked the over-pass and toured the park just like we often did when we had lived there several years ago.
Here is a close-up of the lighthouse.
You can see from this photo what a gorgeous day it was there Saturday.

This is a photo of the Sleeping Giant.
I wasn't able to take my own because it was cloud covered while we were there.
The Sleeping Giant is Thunder Bay's 50 million ton mascot!
The Ojibway people, who have made Lake Superior their home for over 500 years, identify the Sleeping Giant as Nanabijou.
Ojibway legend has it that Nanabijou was turned to stone when the secret location of a rich silver mine was disclosed.
If you are looking for a summer vacation, the Circle Tour around Lake Superior has fabulous scenery.
I like it in both the summer and the fall when the foliage colours are so vibrant.
*************************************************************************************
I couldn't close without showing you a photo of the most patient man in the world.
Well, at least he was on Saturday!
My MIL and I dragged him through two Salvation Army shops, a Value Village store, Canadian Tire, The Home Depot, The Home Store, Dollarama,  and then on to The Hoito to eat.
Finally, after hours at Wal-Mart I ask him if he would mind running over to Chapters for me to buy a book I had picked out for him for Father's Day.
He was more than happy to oblige.
All in all he's a pretty good guy, I think.
I hope you all had a good Father's Day weekend as well.

What a Week...

This last week has really been a roller coaster week.
After all the negotiations and the dealings I don't mind saying I felt spent.
But now it's settled and we have a new town to move to and a new dwelling to move in to.
I spent a good deal of today searching the yard for signs of Spring.
I found a Marsh Marigold in a flower bed.

I found this. Whatever it is, I know it spreads easily.
And it blooms a pretty purple flower.
The gulls were noisy today and seemed to be
having a gay ole' time in the water!
The water was so calm and clear today I could see the rocks shining through.
When the lake is shimmering it always reminds me of Anne of Green Gables.
After crossing over a rumbling bridge she looks back at the water and says,
"Good night, dear Lake of the Shiny Waters. I always say good night to the things I love, just as I would to people. I think they like it. That water looks as if it was smiling at me.
L.M. Montgomery
And now I say good night to you from my own shiny waters.
I think Anne and I might have been kindred spirits
had she been for real......

What A Difference A Week Can Make

If you want to know why I'm suffering from cabin fever, just take a look at this lake!
This is what the lake looked like 10 days ago! I actually thought Spring was on its way. Ha!
You would think after living on or near Lake Superior for over 23 years,  I'd know better by now.

I suppose I was being a little overly optimistic...
Yesterday morning, while I was still sleeping, my husband heard this beautiful woodpecker making an awful racket and got a few decent photos of him.

I hope you can make him out behind all of those branches, he blends so well.
I would give you his official name, but I'm afraid that I've already packed my bird books to take Up North to the lodge.
Yes, we leave this weekend!
I just can't believe how the time has snuck up on me!
 But it is all good.
I've got a lot of catching up to do, so have the teapot on. I'm on my way over now...

November-December 2012

I did a little re-decorating in November.
The only Christmas decorating that was done at my house this year! This is the honest truth.

*********************************************************
Over all 2012 was a good year. Like most years it has had it ups and downs. Losing Dad recently certainly ended the year on a sad note. I already know that 2013 will be bringing more sorrow with my Mom joining Dad. Don't get me wrong, I'm so blessed to know they will be together in heaven, but
I can't imagine life without picking up the phone and hearing their voices at the other end.

I pray that 2013 will be a blessed one for you. One with health, faith, and provision. I know as long as we're walking hand in hand with the Saviour, he will guide us all through whatever challenges await us.

Porch Decor

One week ago last Sunday we got our 1st decent snowfall. Tim and I  took the opportunity to go out to gather the greens. Don't ask me why, but I just
can't get in the mood for holiday decorating until
there is snow on the ground.
Here I am attempting to cut the wee tree for the deck.
However, in the end, it was my husband who ended up doing all of the cutting!

It was such a gorgeous day all around. The beautiful snow, the bright sunshine, and our lovely Lake Superior!
