So...ap Happy!

I just had to show you this fabulous cake my husband gifted me with for our anniversary.
It really look like a plum pudding mold was used or maybe even a jello mold to make this creation.
As you can see, I have cut a special slice just for you!
But please don't eat it because it's soap!!
Now isn't that sweet and imaginative?
Tim actually ordered this amazing soap collection from a lady in Yellowknife, NWT.
I wanted to show you what a unique job she did with all of the soaps.
The soaps were not only beautifully displayed,
the maker also took such great care in naming her soaps, listing the yummy ingredients, and writing a little rhyme with each and every bar.
Tim said she wanted to know a little about me before she decided on the ingredients for my soap cake and the accompanying special made card.
Anyway, it was such a sweet surprise from a dear and considerate husband. Many thanks honey!

Weekend Plans

I don't know what your plans for the weekend are, but I just read our weather forecast and
it is going to be dreary with light snows here. So my plan is to put my feet up in the recliner and
finish reading this book I received from my daughter and her family for Christmas.

Emily seems to think that I have an adventurous spirit, but let me tell you it is nothing
compared to this lady who built cabins, did her own plumbing, and guided people
on outback camping trips-Well, I could go on and on. She is one amazing
lady! Having been to the Boundary waters in the US and Canada both, I truly
appreciate reading  Justine Kerfoot's story.
And Tim & I have been to Grand Marais MN many times too, where the
Gunflint Trail begins.
This book my son and DIL bought for me. As you can see it has very detailed
information for gardening. I love it! So I'm going to read and dream it this
weekend too.
Now because I know you're all going to want to see a close up of my moccasins and have
questions about them (wink), I will tell you that these are not the $260.-$320. ones we sold
in the gallery I managed in the NWT. Our gallery moccasins were hand scraped moose hide
that was smoked by the Dene peoples, then sewn and beaded. I bought mine in the Yukon three
years ago for $80., which was a really good price for them.
This was our moccasin case in the gallery. I had one mother from Toronto tell me that she
couldn't come home without a pair for her daughter last winter. The big fashion rage there
was to wear moccasins all winter and the 'Canada Goose' parka's. We had to laugh because
we couldn't imagine it ever getting that cold in Toronto. After all, Canada Goose, is what
people in the Sub-Arctic and Arctic wear!! Well, it was great for our sales anyway. Now...
A Very Important Announcement
We all know that after Feb.29th any of our followers who
do not use Google (blog spot) will be dropped from our
followers widget on our sidebars.  Because of this I chose
to offer a Linky Follower for my friends who do not use
Blogger. If this pertains to you, please become a Linky
Follower now! It is very easy and because I appreciate
having you as a blogging friend, I would really miss you!
I'm going now to search the friends I follow that are not with Google and become a Linky
follower on their sites.
I hope you have a great weekend-Kimberly

One Year Ago Today

One Year Ago in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Last year my husband and I were living and working in the NWT. This is an area where
photographers go to get shots of the Aurora Borealis. It is also the jumping off point for
people traveling to the Arctic regions. So DH and I decided to celebrate our anniversary
by taking a dog sled ride way out to a remote cabin to get our own shots of the Northern
Lights. See all the dog houses behind us? It was after 10 PM before we even started and
somewhere between minus 25-30C. Notice there are no dogs outside their homes?
Even they weren't dump enough to be outside on a night like this one!!

I'm not real sure when it was that I lost the feelings in my toes, but I just kept thinking-'not
to worry, we will be at the cabin soon and there will be a blazing fire there where I can thaw
my little piggies. But as we approached the cabin I did not see any smoke rising out of any
smoke stack! And that was because we were the 1st party to arrive, and therefore we would
get the fire going for the following parties. Well, as you can see, it didn't take long for our
guide to get the fire blazing and my toes did thaw out-a bit.
My husband Tim, who relishes the cold and adverse temperatures, realizes he has a wimp
for a wife. So he got right to it with the hot chocolate making. A very good man I have there!
Our guide cooked and served us steak, potatoes, and vegetables. Yum! We made many trips out
for shots of the Northern Lights, but to no avail, they weren't out. At midnight several folks
from Japan showed up to spend the night and it was time for us to head back.

We did see the Aurora Borealis as we were heading back once again on the dog sled, but
it wasn't possible to get any shots then. The dogs were in full run and we were bundled and
wrapped up, making it impossible to dig out a camera. This is a photo I borrowed from the
web to give you an idea of what we saw. It was a wonderful experience & I can highly
recommend to all.
If I don't post again before the new year, I wish all of my dear blogging friends a blessed
end to 2011 and may 2012 bring you contentment, good health, and may God bless you
with what you need to live a fulfilling life.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Do you ever have a time when you think you are running out of things to post about? Well, tonight was my time. So I thought I'd just search through my photo gallery and see what I could
come up with. And what did I find? Pictures of my past life. I just can't believe this was less than
a year ago. It seems like eons ago! This is me in my office doing my day end closing for the gallery.
I actually had my snow pants already on-it was a brisk walk at -45  some days to our apartment!

Here is the gallery from one angle. This shelf has pack dolls, Okpiks(owls), tea cosies, hand puppets, and wool duffle mitts.

Of course no Northern gallery is complete without a huge supply of Inukshuks!

The Dene are known world wide for their birch bark baskets adorned with quill work.

Beautiful sealskin mitts with duffle inserts. The coloring is more silver, not the tan as it appears.
The jewelry in the case is carved from Walrus bone.
Cynthia was from Kugluktuk. As you can see from her smile,
she was a sweet lady to have on staff!
We are off to our daughters in the U.P. for the weekend. I will
be back Monday . Hope you all have a great weekend.
                                Blessings-Kimberly
