An Unexpected Detour

We woke up Saturday morning to discover that the mountain pass between
Carcross, Yukon and Skagway, Alaska had been closed overnight due to
washouts from all the recent rains. This meant the only way back to our
work place was to take the ferry from Skagway to Haines, Alaska. But
when we called our employer we discovered  that  there were also three
washouts before the resort.
We felt so thankful that we had decided to drive all the way to Skagway
Thursday night instead of waiting until Friday morning, because the
road was closed after us and we would have missed the wedding!
Haines is a lovely village along the Inside Passage of Alaska.
As you can see the folks who live here love boating for both pleasure, fishing,
and touring.
I was supposed to be back at work this morning, but I guess when life
hands you lemons you have to make lemonade. Right?
Traveling between Haines, Alaska and Haines Junction, Yukon we passed
through the St. Elias mountains. It sure doesn't look like spring here yet.
This drive always makes me feel like I'm traveling between two worlds.
Or, if you've seen the Wizard of Oz, it reminds me of when the movie suddenly
changes from black and white to color. The B&W being the cold mountain
area and the color as you drive back into the lush green valley.
As we neared home
we were happy to see all of the washouts were cleaned away and we are
now safely back at the resort. I'm so thankful to the Lord for a joyous
wedding and his protection in all of our travels there and back.
And 'thank you' to all of you for your well wishes for Elijah & Laura.
You're the best!

  1. Hope you make it back safely. The scenery is gorgeous.

  2. Glad that you had a little longer vacation in a very pretty community and that you're safely home.

  3. I met another couple from Whitehorse this weekend. They came to Juneau for a little get away and said the road closed behind them. They were going to wait until the washouts were cleaned up and then head back via Skagway. Glad you made it home alright!

  4. The scenes there are so lovely. It seems like a different world from where I live. I'm glad you had safe travels.

  5. What a nice little detour.
Happy that you were able to get back home safely.

Hope this is a great week for you too!

    Smiles :)

  6. Another beautiful place, Haines. So you have to have a passport now to go between Alaska and the Yukon?
It used to be you just needed a driver's license but I thought they changed it after 911. Thank you so much for all the gorgeous's REALLY tugging at me though!

  7. Oh- It does make you feel like you are traveling in a time warp, doesn't it? The whole area is just gorgeous and somewhat raw looking in places. I would love to see it in person- xo Diana

  8. Wow, the scenery up there is unbelievable. Glad you made it to the wedding and thankful you made it back home.

  9. Hi Kimberly, So glad you got back alright. You are getting me excited about the sights we might see next year on our inland passage cruise and land tour. Reminds me of Maine as well.
    Have a great week.
    Hugs, Noreen

  10. This is so beautiful. Glad you made it back safe( I am all for making lemonade out of lemons)

  11. your photos sure made the scenery you were enjoying beautiful even the St. Elias mountains photo -- spring for sure has not open-up there.. cold looking
    Glad your safe..

  12. I don't know how I missed the pictures of the wedding. It looks wonderful. Yep when we got married I always thought it was the wedding my Mom always wanted. It wasn't what I wanted but I did what made her happy.
I am glad they got to have a special day. I love your pictures today too. What lovely county. I am so glad you got to see your son.

  13. Beautiful pics, sure hate seeing that snow though. Glad you made it home safe:)

  14. Wow...such beautiful pictures...glad you made it back safely, and soo happy you were able to make the wedding. A memory you will always cherish!

  15. It is beautiful in all of the snow and the boats. Brrrr you must be still in winter wear.

  16. Glad you were able to make the wedding. Haines is a beautiful place!

  17. I'm glad you made it safely back home. Haines is certainly a pretty little coastal town, isn't it.
Here in Manitoba, it isn't rain that's causing problems north of us, but instead it's SNOW! Our daughter's lodge has been affected by it. Their newest guests are stuck in Thompson, the plane cannot land at the Lodge's runway due to there being six inches of snow on it!
    Can you believe it?!
    Have a great day, Cindy

  18. I'm glad you made it home safely! Beautiful photos!

  19. I'm sorry that you have had so much trouble trying to get back home ---but I'm glad you made it TO the wedding.

Gorgeous photos... Even with the problems you have had, that area up there is absolutely beautiful.

  20. The world is made so small through blogging. When I heard about the washout on CBC I thought 'Kimberley is up there' glad you're safely home now!

  21. I need to kick it in gear and get to visiting my blog friends. I think you son's wedding was perfect!! I love how couples want just the simply beautiful ceremonies and not all the hoopla! Wow, extended time off. Glad you made it home safe and sound!!! Hope you week is going great!!

  22. Such beautiful views in that land up north! I'm glad you were finally able to get back from the wedding safely. I hope the weather turns for the better soon@

  23. Someone was telling me that roads were closed up in Alaska and I wondered about you and then is in the Yukon..and yet you were there....go figure.
I'm so glad you were able to attend the wedding...can you imagine?

  24. What beautiful scenery and the reflections in the water. Awesome!

  25. Beautiful. My son (Coast Guard) and his wonderful, lovely wife (my daughter in heart) and their 3 boybarians (aged 11, 3, 8 months) live in Sitka, Alaska. I went in September for the birth of the newest boybarian. Haines reminds me of Sitka. So much beauty. I loved it there. I wish I could live there.
