Beginning the New Year on a Budget?

I, like so many of you, do not just decorate on a budget for the financial benefit of it only. I do it more for the feeling of accomplishment that I achieve  from making something with my own
two hands or the thrill of finding that special object that I've been hunting for  for so long.
Here is a project I began last November. I had  wanted to make unique pillow shams for our bed room. I had found curtains at a resale shop with bands of hearts and deers on them-just what I had wanted. The perfect matching fabric, believe it or not, was a package of painters cloth that I already
 had on hand!
Fast forward to today and the shams are finished. I wasn't able to embroidery the deer in the center as I had hoped because I couldn't find any way of transferring the pattern onto the nubby painters cloth. Hopefully, I'll discover how to do this for any future projects.
Here is a closer view of the shams. They are simple, but with all the red in this room, that's what I was wanting. I only paid a couple of dollars for the curtains that I cut the bands from and only a couple of dollars worth of painters cloth. So,  I think, two dollars each is about the cost of this budget project.
My friend, Dawn, is having her Budget Decorating Party and I'm joining her there today!

  6. These are so pretty! I love projects like this...I will tell you a secret.
I don't do the new fangled...print on the fabric. I have too hard of a time with my printers as it is--so I'd rather not run fabric through it.
    But! I embroidered a tea-towel for a Christmas present.
I did it the old fashioned way.
I taped a piece of paper to my screen...very lightly traced my pattern off the computer. Then...I was going to use a pencil and 'color' the back of the paper and trace it off that way. But, fortunately I found a piece of tracing paper. Oddly, enough, you can still by that at office supply stores...I just laid it between and traced my pattern that way. And...embroidered away!

for your reader LAURIE: Painters drop cloth can found at Lowe's, Home Depot (?) and Walmart...in the paint dept!
Also, If you want them soft like linen. Wash them in warm water with fabric softener and a white vinegar rinse!
You're pillows are lovely. Happy New Year Kimberly!

  8. It really looks nice and I love how your pillow shams turned out. You do such nice work.
I think if you can it would look awesome with a red deer in the middle.
Don't you just love painters cloth? I love that stuff. Every time I go to Home Depot I try to pick some up. I just love how it looks when it made into things. I use it on the pillows I use outside because it is so durable.
I look forward to seeing more of the pretty things you make.
How are you doing? Are you well? How is your Mom?

  13. Oh, I love them.. You are a girl after my own heart... sometimes decorating on a budget feels like it takes forever... but it takes a while to gather the goods when you are slow decorating in order to create something unique that you love!

  20. You did a great job on the pillow shams. Have you considered using carbon paper to transfer the pattern on to the material?

  21. Love the shams. One of my goals this year is to use up fabric I have stashed for projects that I never seem to get around to. As soon as hubby gets all his hunting gear out of the extra room it can return to a sewing room and I'll get slipcovers, new pillows, curtains, etc, done already. Probably. Maybe....

  24. Your pillow shams look lovely. I'm kind of mixed on doing my decor on a budget. I enjoy the satisfaction of doing something that looks expensive, but I was able to make for cheap. Also, my hubby and I are retired, and we enjoy traveling and doing fun-things, so DIY projects need to be thrifty.

  25. Great idea...and they are lovely! The fact that you made these at such a bargain price is icing on the cake!

  26. Hey, I love to save decorating money too! Those pillows turned out great. Love the color coordination. It sounds like you haven't heard of this one product that you can use instead of transferring an embroidery pattern. It works great! Here's the info.http://birdbraindesigns.blogspot.com/2010/07/transfer-eze-embroidery-magic.html
