Blueberry Picking in Wawa

Today my DH and I drove 2 and a half hours north to Wawa to pick blueberries.
If you've never made the trip north on the transcanada highway you have to put
this on your bucket list. I hope you don't mind if I share a few photos with you!

This was taken about one third of the way up Hwy. 17 at an overlook.
Wasn't the water today bluer than blue?

This was taken while driving back from Wawa heading home at Montreal River,
which you'll miss if you blink.  The only thing there is a resort.

This is Wawas town symbol. It is located at the visitors center. The town thinks it's
worn out and they need a new one. I saw a sign saying you can buy a feather for the
new goose for $50. Now that's one way to raise money for it!

This is Wawas rustic visitors centre.

These are a modern version of the totem poles. Notice the Gitchee Gumee on the bottom?

This is Old Womans Bay coming south from Wawa. It has a beautiful sandy beach.

This was our view looking out from Katherines Cove where we had our picnic lunch.
There are many outcroppings like this all along the lake.

This ol' fellow seemed to think, for some reason, that he deserved some of our lunch!

Pines, birches, and jagged rocks line most of the highway.
It was a long day-eleven hours away from home. But well
worth it. The blueberries were small this year. The road into
the site was atrocious. But the drive- it was "priceless".
Tell me, to what lengths would you go to get berries?

  1. The drive looks beautiful. It also looks a lot like the coast of Maine.
Cant wait to see what you make.

  3. For the spectacular scenery alone it would have been worth it! And berries untouched by chemicals? Totally worth it!

  4. It most certainly is gorgeous country up there. It's been a few years since we travelled those roads. Though in 2008 we took the train to Vancouver and saw some amazing sites as we went through Northern Ontario.

  5. What spectacular scenery! We've only been to southeastern Ontario (Toronto and Ottawa) but I would love to drive across some day although I hear it's a long drive across northern Ontario. My kids have done it, my son about 12 times to and from Alberta. There's nothing like wild blueberries and we've driven 'overnorth' (in N.B.) for 3 hours each way to pick years ago. Thanks for sharing these pics and I hope you have a great weekend. Blessings, Pamela

  8. Beautiful photos, looks cool and refreshing. I would like to pick berries this summer, waiting for a day when it's a little cooler. Our temps are staying between 90-100

  12. Coming to you from Cozy Little House's blog! When I saw the words WaWa I started to fumbled in my head about why those words seemed familiar! Then I remembered it was because my husband used to go on these excursion camping trips with some friends up in the Lake Superior Provincial Park... and then hiked and portaged to their destination to "Old Woman Lake". Back then (in the 70's) it was the only way to get there, but now there have been some roads created. A bear tore open their covered aluminum bait bucket that they had in the stream to keep it fresh--that kind of freaked them out! Wawa was a place they would go for groceries! He wants me to go on the train ride up to Wawa and back...I need to take him up on that! Gorgeous gorgeous area from the pictures I've seen that he took! Your pictures are beautiful!

  13. Love the photos! This area reminds me of the San Juan Islands where we are, except that our trees are more dense and taller...Oh and we don't have any wild blueberries (said with sad face).
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  14. Oh My!! Wishing you were our neighbor. We have blubberry bushes that were hanging with huge blueberries and we DON'T even eat them. You could have picked buckets full. Mr.P did several pickings and took to the elderly ladies at church who love them. We couldn't find anybody who wanted to come pick them for free.
But the scenery was absolutely beautiful. I would fake likeing them to see the views that you shared with us. Sounds like a wonderful day. Enjoy your bounty

  15. I would travel that road just for the scenery! Gorgeous! But I had to enlarge the photo that had the road sign with what looked like 80 mph on it. Whew!

The speed sign is in killometers.
    80=50mph

  17. What a gorgeous trip..a wonder for the eyes and soul. Wonder how Old Woman's Bay got its name?

I love picking blueberries and we don't have any in this area to pick.

Thanks for sharing your little bit of heaven with us-xo Diana

  19. How I wish I was heading north this summer! Old Woman's Bay is gorgeous, I love that photo.

And very cool about the Mary Stewart books! I just love them and once I finish my current read, I think one of hers off the shelf is in high order. I don't know about you but I imagine Hayley Mills as the main female in each book I read!

  21. The drive is definitely incredible. The view from the one highway going downhill with the mountain is pretty cool. Glad you got some berries...I have to admit that I would probably just go to our fresh market and get my berries. :o)

  23. What stunning scenery! A lovely drive AND blueberries. What a perfect day!

  24. Considering the cost of any kind of berry today in the supermarkets, it was worth the drive, and on top of that look at everything else you got.

    Beautiful photos!

  27. Oh yes, I know that goose, having made the drive across the country more than once - and I spent some summers working between Atikoken and Fort Francis. There is no where in the world as beautiful in the summer as the top of Lake Superior (without the mosquitoes and black flies!)
